Overview

Ratanmahal Sloth Bear Sanctuary is a lesser-known wildlife reserve located in the Dahod district of Gujarat, near Devgadh Baria. Spanning about 55 sq. km in the Ratanmahal Hills, it was established in 1982 to protect the endangered sloth bear, the sanctuary’s star attraction. The hilly terrain is covered with rich deciduous forests, dominated by teak, mahua, and bamboo trees—providing an ideal habitat for bears and other wildlife.

Besides sloth bears, the sanctuary is home to leopards, hyenas, jackals, civets, langurs, and a variety of reptiles and birds. Over 100 bird species have been recorded, including hornbills, peafowl, and paradise flycatchers, making it a great spot for birdwatching.

Ratanmahal is also culturally rich, with nearby Bhil tribal villages offering insights into traditional forest-based lifestyles. Visitors can enjoy nature trails, trekking, and guided forest walks, especially during the cooler months from October to March.

Accessible by road from Devgadh Baria and about 150 km from Vadodara, the sanctuary remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, making it ideal for offbeat travelers and nature lovers seeking a peaceful retreat into Gujarat’s wilderness. Basic accommodations are available nearby for a rustic but enriching experience.
